NELSON AIRPORT

EDITO was thrilled to be engaged by the Nelson Airport for the role of ‘Interior Fitout Co-Ordinator.’ The new terminal presented a unique and important opportunity to showcase the beautiful Nelson/Tasman region to the nation and the world — acting as the portal to an area saturated in the natural pure beauty that is New Zealand.

The interior brief was to implant a deep ‘sense of place’ into the internal environment with a key focus on colour, form and texture. Utilising our expertise in interior design, graphics, and bespoke features, the influence of EDITO has created an unexpected striking, contemporary look for a very visual, high-traffic public space.

THE SPACE

The dynamic architecture of the physical building was designed to replicate and accentuate the striking alpine skyline, carefully framing and defining the magnificent sun-kissed landscape in the distance, which subsequently influenced the design of the interior.

The architectural structure was an artwork in itself, therefore the interior needn't distract from its iconic and complex design. Instead, the interior was created to effortlessly compliment the architecture through natural tones, clear way-finding, spacial layout, quality attention to detail, designer furniture and colour.

FURNITURE

This innovative project marked the debut of our stunning and versatile Cadrea range, including a barstool and dining chair. The Cadrea exudes a new and dynamic contemporary spirit captured in the body of a classic French Bistro design from the 50's. With its mono block form, it's a surprising and refreshing model that oozes a distinct designer edge — perfect for the bustling new terminal.

EDITO also selected all other furniture elements and designed bespoke pieces in-house to fit the brief by providing comfort, durability and evoking a strong 'sense of place' through the use of warm, natural tones.

BATHROOM MOSAIC

The bathroom of an airport is the perfect opportunity to create a truly calm, relaxing space to refresh and rejuvenate. In response to this, we designed a contemporary, spacious and innovative bathroom block for travellers to take a quiet moment and freshen up.

EDITO decided to design a creative key element to combine all of the interior colours into one unique feature. Reflecting the layered regional landscape and drawing in the vertical lines of the terminal architecture and Nelson’s iconic buildings, we developed an internal wall mosaic with an intricate Tetris-like design and varying heights of vertical panels.

Working with our love of authentic European materials, the mosaic is crafted from beautiful Italian glass tiles from Bissazza — combining the colours and forms of the new terminal with that of the region into a unique bespoke design. The palette draws the terminal’s elements together and reflects the energy and vitality of Nelson. Citrus Yellow is a key colour, applied throughout the terminal, creating cohesion with the interior spaces and external landscape. Tones of green reflect the local native flora and agricultural abundance, while tones of grey add softness to the design and represent the clouds of Aotearoa and iconic Nelson structures such as the Cathedral. Vibrant, calming and restful, the mosaic forms a clear and distinctive sense of our region.

SIGNAGE + WAY-FINDING

In addition to our involvement with the furniture, fittings and materials, EDITO was also engaged to design the signage and way-finding, executed by the talented architects at SPA. We selected the colour yellow due to its vibrancy, visibility, positivity and the relation to our region's natural landscape/flora. Contrasting beautifully against a black background, the yellow is fresh, contemporary and highly practical — tying in with the pops of citrus in the bathroom mosaic and highlighting the stunning brass detailing throughout the terminal.
